  • About your host, Anslem

I grew up on the houseboat Platypus in Oxford where my bedmates were Marmaduke the chicken & Boa the constrictor. Thence to the Serengeti for a couple of years. In 1979 the family moved to the Kitengela (Athi/Kapiti) plains on the edge of the Nairobi National Park. 'Bird', Anselms' eponymous crested crane, moved with the family to the plains.During my apprenticeship I fell in love with the frustrating, challenging & deeply satisfying process of glass blowing, and, all fired up, came back to Kenya to set up the craft.

  • What we'll do

Welcome to your once in a lifetime glassblowing experience.Wear old comfortable cotton clothing. Nylon and hot glass are not buddies. A long sleeve shirt will add a bit of extra protection. The studio is messy, so be ready to get your hands dirty. Wear closed comfortable shoes. Trainers are fine.  We will provide you with a sanitized mouthpiece. Please make sure to give it back when your experience is over. We will also provide you with gloves and an arm protector.  Always hold the pipe above the trainer’s hand - they will show you where. Check the heat of anything (eg tools/rails/pipes)- by putting your hand near it (not touching) before grabbing it.  An expert will hold your hand every step of the way, so you will be closely guided.

  • Who can come

Guests ages 10 and up can attend.

  • Notes

For ‘blowing bubbles’ the result is rather ethereal and usually won’t survive for longer than five minutes, so this one really is about the experience only, and of course those instagramable moments.

  • Where we'll be

From Bomas of Kenya on Magadi Rd, turn left on Masai Lodge Road before Ongata Rongai, then past Nazarene University through Tuala and first left after the Mosque.
